Unofficial Title Holder Out Of Champions League

Barcelona 3 (Messi 45, 71, Xavi, 69) Arsenal 1 (Busquets 51og) Barca win 4-3 on agg

Ten-man Arsenal succumbed to Barcelona as they were again knocked out of the Champions League by the Catalan outfit.
A Cesc Fabregas mistake allowed Lionel Messi to chip a ball over keeper Manuel Almunia and slot in for Barca.
Arsenal levelled through a Sergio Busquets own goal before the visitors had Robin van Persie harshly sent off.
Barcelona took full advantage as a brilliant move led to Xavi slotting in before Laurent Koscielny's foul on Pedro let Messi score from the spot.
Arsene Wenger's side had their Champions League dreams shattered at the Nou Camp last season when a Messi-inspired Barcelona came from a goal down to win their quarter-final 4-1 and 6-3 on aggregate.
The Gunners' return this time around, with a 2-1 lead from the first leg of their last 16 tie, was a test of whether they had progressed and developed enough to show the steel and substance to beat the Spaniards.
Ultimately, they fell short again and, although the north London outfit will have cause for complaint with the dismissal of Van Persie for a second yellow card, they were given another footballing lesson by the home side.
Arsenal barely failed to muster a shot on goal as they spent most of the game trying to stop the Barca tide.
Van Persie and Fabregas had missed the defeat at the Nou Camp last season and, although they started this time around, the result was the same as the pair played pivotal roles in Arsenal's downfall.
The Gunners had been forced to swap their artistry for attrition as Pep Guardiola's team quickly set the tone of the game by dominating possession while passing and probing for an opening.
Barcelona's work rate in winning the ball back helped keep up their relentless pressure as Arsenal, who had to replace goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny with Almunia early on, could not produce the crisp and controlled passing required to provide some relief.
The saving grace for the Gunners was that they were defending with discipline and determination, which was initially limiting their opponents to fleeting chances.
Overlapping Barcelona left-back Adriano hit the outside of the bar with an acute-angled shot before a weaving Messi run ended in him shooting straight at Almunia.
However, as half-time beckoned when Fabregas, who had described the Nou Camp as "mythical" in the build-up, inexplicably attempted a back-heel to Jack Wilshere 30 yards out only to give the ball away to Iniesta.
The Barcelona midfielder accepted the gift and dinked a ball through to Messi, who brilliantly lofted it over the onrushing Almunia before smacking in a shot.
It was a body blow for the Gunners and, despite being given a route back into the game when a Samir Nasri corner was headed into his own net by Busquets after 53 minutes, the visitors quickly suffered another setback.
Van Persie, who had been booked for an earlier foul on Dani Alves, was dismissed three minutes later for a second booking after attempting a shot at goal just after the whistle had been blown.
The Dutchman claimed he had not heard the whistle but it did not take the Catalan club long to make their numerical advantage count as Iniesta produced a wriggling run before finding Villa and his first time pass released Xavi, who slotted in.
Koscielny felled Pedro to concede a spot-kick, which Messi expertly converted, as Arsenal were on the brink of capitulation.
It was only the heroics of Almunia which kept the score down as he denied Ibrahim Afellay and Messi, while Alves missed a gilt-edged chance.
Arsenal substitute Nicklas Bendtner could have punished the La Liga outfit by getting a goal which would have seen his side win on away goals.
But, when found by a late Wilshere cross, like his team, the striker did not have the quality needed as his control let him down.

Spurs In Champions League Action

Spurs clinched top spot in UEFA Champions League Group A after a thrilling 3-3 draw with FC Twente.
Peter Wisgerhof put through his own goal after 12 minutes, but Denny Landzaat brought Twente back into the match from the penalty spot. Jermain Defoe restored his side's advantage two minutes into the second half, but Roberto Rosales levelled. Defoe struck again just before the hour mark, but Twente equalised for a third time through a fine free-kick from Nacer Chadli.
The home side threatened first, Heurelho Gomes having to fully extend himself to palm a long-range Wout Brama shot round the post minutes into the match. Yet it was the London outfit who broke the deadlock in cruel fashion. Wisgerhof played an innocuous back pass to goalkeeper Sander Boschker, but the ball bounced over the foot of the 40-year-old and rolled into the net.
However, it didn't take long for the Dutch champions to restore parity. Benoît Assou-Ekotto blocked a Rosales drive with his arm, and Landzaat stroked the penalty home at the second time of asking; his first effort being disallowed because of player encroachment. Marc Janko had a good opportunity to reward his team's subsequent superiority with a goal just before the break, but his left-footed shot on the turn went well wide.
They were made to pay for the missed chances when Harry Redknapp's men struck immediately after the restart. Aaron Lennon, a first-half substitute for the injured Jermaine Jenas, split the home defence with a reverse pass that Defoe confidently dispatched from inside the box. Once again Twente drew level. Theo Janssen put in a delightful cross from the left and Rosales rose to power a header beyond Gomes.
This time it took a mere three minutes for Spurs to forge ahead again. Janssen's slip let in Wilson Palacios, and although Boschker got down to save his low effort, Defoe was on hand to knock in the rebound. Still the joint Dutch league leaders wouldn't lie down; Chadli curled a sublime free-kick into the top corner on 64 minutes to peg back the visitors again with the game's final goal.
With Inter Milan losing 3-0 in Germany to Werder Bremen, the point was enough to see Spurs through as group winners. Before the group stages began all Spurs fans would've been pleased to secure second place so winning the group is an amazing achievement in their debut Champions League campaign

Tre Fiori v Rudar Pljevlja

Yesterday (June 30th) may have been a rest day at the World Cup but elsewhere in Europe the first official match of the 2010/11 season took place.  No really it did!!!

The first qualifying round of this season's Champions League kicked off with a match between Societa Polisportiva Tre Fiori or Tre Fiori to their friends versus FK Rudar Pljevlja.  Now this may have skipped you by but not here at Worldwide Football.  We say we have it covered and covered it is.

We thought it was only right to give this fixture some air time but what do we know about the clubs that took part.  Here are all the facts about the sides, and of course the result.

Tre Fiori are the current champions of the San Marino League, or Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio, they are the most successful club in San Marino football with 6 Championship titles and this is their second season in Champion League football.  Last season they were knocked out on penalties by Andorran outfit UE Sant Julia after drawing 2-2 on aggregate over the two legs.
They don't actually have a home ground, the clubs in San Marino use a host of grounds on a random basis but the biggest capacity is at the Stadio Di Fiorentino which has a capacity of only 700 surely this will be the smallest ground to host a match in this seasons tournament.
They are managed by Floriano Sperindio and their main rivals are those playing for FC Fioretino where crowds have been known to get as high as 600.

Honours:
League Winners: 1988, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2009, 2010
Coppa Titano Winners: 1966, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1985, 2010
Trofeo Federale Winners: 1991, 1993

Rudar Pljevlja are the current champions of Montenegro where they play in the Montenegrin First League (easier to remember than the San Marino one!!).  Last season they won the title for the first time since 1966 when it was the Yugoslav First League.  Since the new league started in 2006 no team has won the title more than once.  This is their first season in European Football and all of their squad is made up of people from Montenegro.
Their ground, the Stadion Gradski Pljevlja which has a capacity of 11,000 and are managed by Nebojša Vignjević.

Honours:
League Winners: 1996, 2010
